_disabled-student-takes-first-steps-in-10-years-on-stage-at-her-graduation.webp "A chronically ill student took her first steps in 10 years - to accept her awards for excellence at graduation. <br/><br/>Melika Ghanaati, now 19, hasn't been able to walk unaided since 2013 due to four debilitating medical conditions. <br/><br/>She was born with a severe form of scoliosis - a curved spine - as well as congenital myopathy, a disorder which has caused weakness in her muscles. <br/><br/>Growing up, she either used a walker or a wheelchair - and has needed various surgeries to correct her curved spine. <br/><br/>But after a year of intensive physiotherapy, Melika was able to walk up to her teacher unaided and receive her high school diploma, as well as two awards for excellence. <br/><br/>Melika, who is now a student at York University, Canada, said: “This was such a special moment for me - my teachers and closest friends were worried about me, but I proved everyone wrong. <br/><br/>“I wanted to surprise everyone with the walk, but most importantly, I believed I owed it to myself.”<br/><br/>Melika was born with a number of conditions - including scoliosis, severe club feet, congenital myopathy and recurring kidney stones. <br/><br/>But her scoliosis and club feet were the biggest hurdles preventing her from being able to walk. <br/><br/>Up until the age of 13, Melika had a number of surgeries in an attempt to get the curve and club feet corrected. <br/><br/>She even briefly died in ICU after surgery at the age of 12. <br/><br/>She said: “Between the ages of 10 to 13 I had three spinal surgeries.<br/><br/>“I even had a code blue - I died for a few seconds. <br/><br/>“I lost a lot of blood flow and needed to have a blood transfusion.\")

_half-of-kids-have-low-confidence-because-of-their-imperfect-teeth-study.webp "Half of young children experience low confidence because of their imperfect teeth causing both them - and their parents - stress and anxiety.<br/><br/>A study of 2,000 parents and children aged 4-11 found 84 per cent reckon their smile makes them feel less confident.<br/><br/>They blame this insecurity on missing teeth (20 per cent), them not being “white” (20 per cent), wonky (19 per cent) or gappy (13 per cent).<br/><br/>But acclaimed British photographer Ian Rankin has captured powerful photographs of primary school children proudly showing of their imperfectly perfect teeth, and showcasing the wobbly, gappy and snaggly gnashers in all their glory.<br/><br/>Ian partnered with Aquafresh after research revealed 36 per cent of kids have been embarrassed to smile or laugh due to how they feel about their teeth.<br/><br/>This devastating statistic truly demonstrates the impact of low confidence on the youngest in our society.<br/><br/>But it's not only children that are being impacted by the pressure for perfect teeth, but it’s a worrying time for parents too.<br/><br/>Almost half (48 per cent) noticed their child becoming self-conscious or lacking in confidence due to how their teeth or smile look.<br/><br/>A further 43 per cent said their children are impacted by society’s obsession with “picture perfect” teeth, and almost all (98 per cent) believe dental health is an important factor in their child’s overall confidence and self-esteem.<br/><br/>Ian Rankin said: \")

David and Christine West, from Alliance, Nebraska, have been waiting to make Brianna-Cate's adoption official for almost three years, having become her guardians in August 2021. The couple started caring for Brianna in tragic circumstances: they were best friends with Brianna's parent's, Brian and Catherene Johnson, before a car accident killed the pair on April 23, 2021. Brianna was trapped in the vehicle for four hours before she was helicoptered to Aurora to undergo treatment for a fractured leg and a cut on her head. Under David and Christine's care, Brianna was accepted into Kiddie Kampus, a pre-preschool offered by Alliance Public Schools, where she made friends and found a support network. When her adoption was set to become official, Brianna's teachers for the previous two years suggested holding a class celebration. The children in Brianna's class were encouraged to make signs and drawings – and on March 4, they headed to Box Butte County Courthouse in Alliance on their school bus. Once Brianna, David and Christine's session were completed, the family headed out through the courtroom doors, where they were greeted by Brianna's classmates, who they did not know would be showing up. Having seen her friends, Brianna started jumping for joy in the lobby while her new parents fought back tears.")
