Americans admit to ignoring their “check engine” light for an average of four months before addressing it, according to new research.

A new survey of 2,000 American car owners revealed that one in five (20%) even admit to putting it off between six and 18 months.

This may be because almost one-third (32%) will wait “as long as possible” before bringing their car in to get serviced.

In fact, another 39% are likely to wait for an incident or for something to break before even considering bringing their car in for service.

The research also revealed that 35% regret putting their car care off — resulting in unexpected repair fees (39%), emotional stress (22%) and even a roadside emergency (21%).

And while the average American feels that preventative car care is important (93%), almost half (48%) said they push back getting their car serviced because of financial constraints.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Pep Boys, the data showed that when it comes to car care, Americans are prioritizing some things over others with exterior light issues (11%), window and windshield cracks (9%) and the radio or sound system (3%) ranking at the bottom of the list.

Americans have had their current car for an average of seven years and 93% own their car, compared to leasing it (7%).

Each year, the average respondent spends more than $400 on car maintenance ($438) and estimates that they’ve spent an astounding $6,272 in total servicing their current car over the years.

To get their car serviced, Americans are most likely to go to a dealership (31%) or a local mechanic (27%) and the majority (62%) do so every three to six months.

In relation to their other responsibilities, 38% of respondents said caring for their car is a “very high” priority.

Despite this, 21% feel like their car is going to break down any day now.

When asked what would cause the most stress if repairs were needed, engine trouble (66%), bad brakes (33%) and fuel system issues (31%) ranked as the top three.

In fact, 26% even admit that their car stresses them out more than their finances or even personal relationships (14%).

Despite these worries, only 32% of respondents wished they lived somewhere a car wasn’t necessary, perhaps because the majority (65%) don’t believe that life would be easier without one — an indicator of just how important they are to our lives.

WHAT CAR REPAIRS STRESS OUT AMERICANS THE MOST?
● Engine - 66%
● Brakes - 33%
● Fuel system - 31%
● Exhaust system - 16%
● Tires - 15%
● AC/heat unit - 15%

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 American car owners aged 25+ was commissioned by Pep Boys between March 29 and April 8, 2024. One in three Brits 'hate' unexpected phone calls and a quarter rarely or never answer them.

A poll of 2,000 adults found 31 per cent ‘panic’ when the phone rings - especially if it’s from an unknown number or someone they haven’t heard from in a while.

As many as 40 per cent prefer to know when someone is going to ring them, and half simply won’t pick up a call that they’re not expecting.

But for anyone planning to ring someone without pre-warning, try doing it in the afternoon – as it’s the time people are most likely to actually pick up.

The study was commissioned by Buffalo Trace Distillery [www.BuffaloTraceDistillery.co.uk] ahead of the opening its first store outside of the USA, on 6th May.

The whiskey brand also turned an iconic British phone box green in Covent Garden and challenged passers-by to answer a call from inside, with those who dared to pick up the phone getting an exclusive tasting experience.

Andrew Duncan, global brand director for the brand, said: “It’s clear spontaneity is becoming a lost art form.

“And we think that’s a shame because many of life’s greatest experiences happen when one commits to living what we like to call perfectly untamed – bolder, more daring, and less afraid of the unknown.

“We believe fortune favours the bold, and picking up the phone has the potential to result in some amazing adventures.”

The study also found nearly 37 per cent are less likely to pick up an unexpected call now than they were five years ago.

Although while 30 per cent of men prefer to plan everything in their lives and could never do something spontaneously, only 23 per cent of women felt the same.

Similarly, 72 per cent of women are more likely to answer the phone from an unknown number, compared to 57 per cent of men.

And 12 per cent said it’s been a week or longer since they spoke to someone on the phone – with some not even remembering the last time.

Instead, 26 per cent prefer to communicate via social media rather than using their voice on a phone line.

But the research, carried out via OnePoll, found 23 per cent of those who have answered a call they weren’t expecting revealed it led to something surprisingly good.

Andrew Duncan added: “As communication moves more online, it’s natural to feel less comfortable with picking up the phone when it rings, but there really is no substitute for tangible moments of connection with others.

“We wanted to remind people that sometimes, the unexpected call can lead to simple but important delights, like spending quality time with friends and family.

“Unexpected moments shared over a glass of whiskey are, unsurprisingly, some of our favourites.”

A married man says he became “obsessed” with another woman after meeting her at a course - but his wife has since forgiven him after realising it “wasn’t his fault”.

Ruth Perl, 58, and her husband David, 64, have spent 13 years recovering from the incident.

David never acted on his feelings towards the person he fancied - but he chose to tell the woman after confiding in Ruth.

He started researching an emotional experience known as ‘limerence’ - which means intrusive, romantic thoughts about another person.

David realised his feelings were unwanted - he had no control over them and wasn't interested in beginning an affair with the woman.

After telling Ruth about his realisation, the couple spent time rebuilding their relationship - and say they’re happier than ever.

David, a couples’ therapist from St. Albans, Herts., said: “It wasn’t a normal crush, it was weird and disturbing - but we’ve put in the years to heal ourselves since.

“It was a difficult one - I did end up telling the other person, as I was encouraged to do so through therapy.

“I think she was horrified - in hindsight, it was really unfair to put that on her.

“But it’s all about forgiveness, we’ve done the work and are happier than ever.”

David met the woman he developed feelings for on January 14, 2011 - after chatting to her at a training course.

Their conversation lasted less than 20 minutes, but David could feel he was “besotted” by her - without being able to put a finger on why.

“I’ve had crushes before,” he added. “We both have. But nothing like this - this was really unusual.”

David thought about her, night-and-day, for weeks.

He looked online at forums about “obsessive love” - and came across a post about limerence.

He said: “I thought, 'jeez, this is what I’ve got to a T.'

“Something’s not right - I was absolutely obsessed and I only spoke to her for 20 minutes.

“I kept going over every single word she said to me, every little action.

“The moment I’d wake up, I’d rehearse in my head what I might say to her if she came up to talk to me.

“I’d experience soaring highs if she replied to an email - and extreme lows if she didn’t.

“It was like an intermittent reward.”

Knowing the feeling wasn’t going to go away any time soon, he decided to tell Ruth - who also works as a couples’ therapist.

She said: “David told me, and this was all going on about five days after my dad’s funeral.

“I was in horrific grief at the time, and so my first thoughts were: ‘Oh, for god’s sake. How can you be so bloody stupid?’

“My dad had just died, and my husband wanted to p*ss off into fantasy land.

“We went into freefall, and it was a very, very difficult 12 months.”

After choosing to concentrate on grieving for her dad for a year, Ruth says she “finally had the brain capacity” to sit down with David, and ask him what was going on.

He hadn’t acted on his feelings - and actively decided he wouldn’t “consummate” the crush.

“David reached out to me,” Ruth said. “He asked me, ‘please help me understand what’s going on.’

“He was so confused. I asked him if he still wanted to be married, and he said, ‘I don’t want to throw away what we’ve got.’

“I told him to sit in the confusion, and I’d do what I could to support him.

“But I knew that what will be will be, we might not necessarily make it out of this.”

David said: “We started having marriage counselling - and one thing I want to stress is it isn’t an excuse to cheat.

“I was responsible for what I did - but it did make me realise that often, people don’t set out to have an affair.”

David explored some of the ways therapists encourage people to “heal” from limerence - including starving themselves from contact, or consummating it with the other person.

He settled on going to therapy, and letting the woman know he couldn’t speak to her anymore.

Now, David and Ruth help other couples going through the same thing - and have taught their children, Hannah-Mai, 32, and Isobel, 29, how to value their own relationships.

Ruth said: “It was important our two daughters knew about all this.

“They were older teenagers when this was all going on, and they understood it.

“We thought it was very important for them to understand that all marriages have differences - but you don’t throw the towel in when the going gets tough.

“Even when you’re talking about a full-blown physical affair. Once is a mistake, twice is a habit.”
